With my beloved Klass at 17 y/o and Gabel at 18 y/o, I decided that it was time to start looking for another horse to bring along for when Klass and.or Gabel must retire. 5 trips and 4 failed PPEs later, I was not sure I was going to find the right horse. Amy and I traveled from Florida (twice) to Washington to Ohio before landing in Atlanta to look at 8 horses over a long, hot weekend.
And Toric wasn't even one of the horses we were going to see! His owner and trainer, Julie Cochran, was going to show us two other horses and just mentioned that we might also want to look at Toric. Julie had not actively started marketing Toric as she hadn't really decided to sell him. But since we were coming she told me about him as an option.
Julie purchased Toric as a yearling and has been his only trainer/rider. They debuted at 3rd and 4th level in 2012 with scores from 61% to 68.7%.
It was very clear to Amy and I that Toric was more than an option for me, he was a perfect fit. But after 4 failed PPEs, I was not going to get my hopes up until we cleared that hurdle. And Toric more than passed his PPE.....physical, flexions and x-rays were all perfect.
During the first 90 days I didn't get to ride Toric more than a handful of times. Work kept me on the road 7 out of 8 weeks. But work settled down and I am having so much fun getting to know my new boy. I look forward to a wonderful winter developing our partnership and setting goals for 2013!
